My mailman surprised me by bringing my June Birchbox this morning. I say surprised because my tracking information still has my box out in Lomard, IL. Once again, Birchbox is spoiling me. After three straight months of coveted six-sample boxes, June brought me seven samples. This is definitely not the norm, but it’s a fun treat, especially since this is my 1-year anniversary with Birchbox.
I know you all know by now that Birchbox is a monthly beauty and lifestyle subscription service that costs $10/month, and delivers 4-6 high end samples to your door each month, all based on the beauty profile you fill out. You can also review each item in your box and earn 10 Birchbox points per review. 100 points = $10 to spend in the Birchbox shop on full-size items. So even if your box is a bust, they still give you the equivalent of $4-6 for taking five minutes to write some reviews. Hands down, Birchbox has the best point system of any service out there.
This month, Birchbox partnered with JetBlue for the June box. The theme is “Away We Go,” so of course this box is all about travel. Each box came with a cute travel quiz, shaped like an airline ticket or boarding pass, to determine where you should travel next. The options were Austin, Chicago, New York City, Portland, and San Francisco. I took the quiz and got Austin, which is fitting because Austin is next on my list of cities to visit. Two of my good friends moved to Austin last year, plus I’ve heard such awesome things about wacky, weird Austin. On to the samples, though!
My first sample is Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real Mascara. I am legitimately excited to get this sample because I’ve been wanting to try this mascara for a long time now. This mascara is supposed to lengthen and thicken lashes with its special wand. I’ve heard some really amazing things, so I’ll be interested to see if this can live up to the hype.
My next sample is Davines Love Smoothing Shampoo. This is a huge sample at 2.5 fluid ounces. It smells amazing too, really fruity and floral. It’s supposed to soften, detangle, and smooth frizzy hair, which I am all about. I’ve also heard good things about this brand, and I’ve seen so many Birchboxers get samples of this, so I’m curious to see if it works.
I also got Davines Love Smoothing Conditioner and Davines OI All In One Milk. After how awesome the shampoo sample size and packaging was, getting these two products in foil packets is disappointing. I really dislike foil packets (they’re messy, hard to get the product out of). Obviously the conditioner matches the shampoo, so I’ll assume it smells the same. The All In One Milk is supposed to be a leave-in treatment that you apply to damp hair. It protects from the sun and tames frizz.
My next sample is Caudalie Polyphenol C15 Anti-Wrinkle Defense Serum. This is a teeny, tiny little sample. I’ve sampled Caudalie products before (grape water eye makeup remover), so I know this is a quality brand. I don’t really use any anti-wrinkle products, but I guess it never hurts to start. This product is really watery and milky in consistency, and doesn’t smell that great. Plus, there is next to nothing in the tube, so I don’t know how well I’ll be able to determine it’s effects. This is a dud for me.
Next I got Perlier Body Cream in Shea Almond. This is another really generously sized sample. I love hand creams and lotions and am always looking for one that will tame my crocodile skin (psoriasis). This one says it’s fast-absorbing and rehydrates skin. Because it’s made with almond milk, it also smells wonderful. Think maraschino cherries or almond extract.
My final sample this month is Catherine Malandrino Fragrance. Birchbox has yet to send me a perfume sample that I don’t love, which is really unfortunate because this fragrance retails for $110 if you buy the full size. Yikes. This is a fantastic summer scent though, floral and elegant, without being too sweet. The sample is also generously sized, so hopefully I’ll get several uses out of this.
So that is my June “Away We Go” Birchbox. I don’t have any big travel plans this summer, thanks to grad school never taking a day off, so I’ll be enjoying these travel-ready samples in the luxury of my own home (can you say staycation?). Where are you off to this summer?
