My apartment is a five minute walk from a grocery store but I find myself avoiding it. It’s a situation where it’s the only grocery store in the area (the next closest is about 3 miles away) so they definitely take advantage and raise their prices in accordance. I’ve been needing to grab some snack type items, but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money, so I took the train downtown to Trader Joe’s. I am convinced that Trader Joe’s is the best grocery store in the world, but only if you’re open to trying new, potentially unusual things. Not only are their prices amazing and their store decor kooky and fun (think tiki bar), but their food is so good. Every time I go, I find something wacky that I end up loving (chocolate covered edamame? Don’t mind if I do). Plus, where else can you get Speculoo’s cookie butter? That alone is worth the train ride.
